Classifying NAICS Codes in Your Book of Business

Before beginning the process of coding NAICS across your agency’s book, it helps to align on your approach. You can use this tool to:

  • Make it an agency-wide initiative by exporting and dividing up the work among your employees (Account Managers, Producers, or other roles).

  • Maintain prior NAICS work that may have been completed in Clarity, while ensuring new codes are consistently entered into the management system.

We recommend entering NAICS codes directly in your agency management system. This ensures accuracy, keeps your internal records consistent, and allows our platform to ingest those codes automatically during the next data upload. Clarity entry remains available, but using your AMS as the single source of truth is the best long-term approach.

Where Your Agency’s NAICS Codes Come From

Your agency’s NAICS codes are derived from two primary sources, in the following waterfall order:

  1. AMS – If the NAICS code is entered on a customer account in your agency management system, this is always the first source we use.

  2. Data Axle – If no NAICS code exists in your AMS, AgencyKPI uses Data Axle as a third-party NAICS engine to classify accounts based on customer details in the book of business report (name, address, phone, website).

Important: If neither your AMS nor Data Axle returns a NAICS code, you also have the option to enter it manually in Clarity (Customer Accounts). While Clarity entry is supported, we recommend prioritizing entry in your AMS whenever possible, since this ensures the code is part of your system of record and will be automatically ingested on the next data upload.

Getting Started

To view your list of unclassified NAICS accounts, click the “Details” button on the NAICS Classification chart.

By default, the chart and table display unclassified accounts. If you’d like to see classified accounts instead, simply click the blue Classified under the details to change the view.

Viewing NAICS Classification Metrics

The NAICS tool provides a snapshot of your book with visibility into both:

  • Unclassified accounts vs. total accounts.

  • Metrics broken down by:

    • Account Manager

    • Producer

    • Branch

    • Billing Carrier

    • Bill Method

    • Line of Business (LOB)

    • Policy Status

These filters are multi-selectable and appear in the order you select them, giving you a customized view of how unclassified accounts are distributed across your agency.

You’ll also see a bar chart that trends the number of unclassified accounts over time, according to the metric you’ve selected.

Using the Export Table

At the bottom of the page, you’ll find a detailed table showing the unclassified accounts that need attention. This table is designed for export so you can:

  • Generate a workable list of accounts.

  • Divide assignments among your employees for efficient follow-up.

  • Prioritize by impact — the best approach is to sort by highest premium accounts first. This allows your team to make a bigger impact faster.

  • Track progress directly in your management system as codes are updated.

Pro Tip: Don’t spin your wheels NAICS coding very small accounts (for example, a $500 policy). Set a goal to tackle the top of the book, then work your way down.

From Unclassified to Unstoppable

Every NAICS code you add brings your agency closer to a complete, reliable picture of your business. By tackling your highest-value accounts first, sharing the workload across your team, and making your AMS the single source of truth, you’re not just cleaning up data — you’re giving your agency the power to see opportunities more clearly and move faster with carriers and partners.

Start small, set goals, and celebrate progress along the way. Each classification is a step toward stronger insights, smarter strategy, and unstoppable momentum for your agency.
